About the Lerner Theatre
The Elkhart Lerner Theatre, located in Elkhart, Indiana, is a historic gem in the heart of the city. Built in 1924, this stunning theatre has been a beloved destination for live entertainment and performances for nearly a century.
Harry Lerner was an Elkhart Businessman who had a vision for building a theatrical place in downtown Elkhart.
This came to life in 1924 when the Lerner Theatre was constructed on the corner of Main Street and Franklin in downtown Elkhart.
Upon its opening, the Elkhart Lerner Theatre was a state-of-the-art facility, featuring a 1,500 seat auditorium, a spacious lobby, and a grand marquee that lit up the streets of downtown Elkhart. The theatre quickly became a popular destination for live entertainment, hosting a wide variety of performances from touring Broadway shows to local community productions.
In 1990 the Lerner was purchased by the city of Elkhart from Ruth Miller in an attempt to save it from deterioration due to vacancy. It was called the ELCO at the time but the city changed the name back to the Lerner.
From 2009 to 2011 the Elkhart Lerner Theatre underwent an $11 million renovation.
Today, the Elkhart Lerner Theatre continues to be a thriving hub of live entertainment in the Elkhart community. The theatre hosts a wide variety of performances throughout the year, including concerts, plays, musicals, and comedy shows.
