Essenhaus
Best Amish Restaurant – Middlebury, IN
Essenhaus is a beloved restaurant located in the heart of Middlebury, Indiana. Known for its delicious homestyle cooking and friendly atmosphere, this family-owned establishment has been a staple in the community for over 40 years.
Founded by the Miller family in 1976, Essenhaus began as a small-town café serving up classic Amish recipes. The restaurant quickly gained popularity for its hearty meals and homey feel, and in 1984, the Millers expanded the business to include a bakery and gift shop. Today, Essenhaus is a sprawling complex featuring multiple dining rooms, a bakery, a quilt shop, and a museum showcasing the history of the Amish culture.
The menu at Essenhaus is a true testament to the restaurant’s Amish roots. The kitchen team uses locally-sourced ingredients to create dishes that are both wholesome and flavorful. Some of the most popular menu items include the fried chicken, homemade noodles, and the signature Amish meatloaf. Diners can also enjoy a variety of sides, including mashed potatoes, gravy, and fresh-baked bread.
In addition to the regular menu, Essenhaus also offers a variety of daily specials and seasonal dishes. During the summer months, guests can enjoy grilled items like BBQ ribs and burgers, while the fall brings hearty soups and stews to warm up on a chilly day. And of course, no visit to Essenhaus is complete without trying one of their famous pies – with over 30 flavors to choose from, there’s something to satisfy every sweet tooth.
But what really sets Essenhaus apart is the atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated in a classic Amish style, with quilts and other handmade crafts on display throughout the dining rooms. The staff are all friendly and welcoming, making every guest feel at home. And the dining experience is truly one-of-a-kind – guests are seated at long, communal tables, encouraging conversation and a sense of community.
In addition to the restaurant, Essenhaus also offers a variety of other attractions and activities. The bakery is a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth, featuring a wide selection of cookies, pastries, and of course, pies. The quilt shop offers a unique selection of handmade quilts, perfect for home decor or as a special gift. And the museum is a fascinating look into the history and culture of the Amish people.
But perhaps the most popular attraction at Essenhaus is the daily buffet. Featuring a rotating selection of dishes, the buffet is a great way for guests to try a little bit of everything. And with a wide variety of options – including vegetarian and gluten-free options – there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Overall, Essenhaus is a true gem in the community of Middlebury. With its delicious food, welcoming atmosphere, and variety of attractions, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone in the area. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make sure to stop by and experience the unique charm of Essenhaus for yourself.
